Four Seasons' arts residency program featured in Education Week
The arts residency program at Four Seasons Arts Plus was recently featured in Education Week. The arts residency program is in its second year at Four Seasons and consists of three artists, including one who is hard of hearing and one who is deaf. The artists use a curriculum in an inclusion model of teaching to facilitate communication through the arts. The artists also incorporate sign language during the lessons. As a result of the program, students have become a closer community, celebrated differences and figured out new ways to communicate, said Four Seasons Principal Heidi George. Farnsworth String Orchestra performs at the Union Depot
Congratulations to the Farnsworth Aerospace Advanced String students who recently performed during the third annual Holiday Gala Fundraiser for the East Side Area Business Association at the Union Depot in downtown Saint Paul. The students performed holiday music and music from various cultures under the direction of Ms. Carruthers.

Angie Gaszak wins grand prize for Healthy Brown Rice Menu contest
Angie Gaszak, the nutrition specialist at SPPS, was recently named the Grand Prize Winner of the Healthy Brown Rice Menu contest held by USA Rice Federation. Gaszak’s winning dish, Sofrito Rice, demonstrates the combination of delicious and nutritious food that Nutrition Services strive to serve every day in SPPS. Sofrito is a traditional Spanish dish that combines the vibrant flavors of tomatoes, onions, jalapeños and spices. If that sounds good, here is the recipe for you to try at home.

Barbara Schmidt honored by U's College of Education and Human Development's Alumni Society
Barbara Schmidt was recently honored with the Award of Excellence by the University of Minnesota's College of Education and Human Development’s Alumni Society.

Schmidt was recognized for her “tireless dedication to the students of Saint Paul Public Schools and her mentorship of countless new math teachers” in the district throughout her nearly 30-year career in education.

Schmidt began her career at SPPS in 1986 teaching math at Hazel Park. She spent the majority of her career as a math teacher at Ramsey before moving to Como Park Senior High School, where she currently teaches geometry.

The Alumni Society's Award of Excellence is given each year to two individuals who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in their profession, served as mentors to others in their field and shown exceptional volunteer service.

LEAP celebrates 20 years serving immigrant students with Culture Party
For 20 years, LEAP High School has adapted and strived to provide the best education for new immigrant students at Saint Paul Public Schools.

LEAP will celebrate its history and diverse student body at the school’s annual Culture Party on Thursday, Dec. 18.

The diversity of LEAP’s students has changed over the past two decades, said Principal Rose Santos. And with that, the school has expanded to meet the community’s needs. Read more about the school's past 20 years.
