SPPS graduation rates surpass state averages, narrow achievement gap
Graduation rates in nearly all high schools in Saint Paul Public Schools exceed the state’s average, significantly reducing the racial disparity between white students and students of color, the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) announced Wednesday.

MDE released graduation rates from 2011 to 2013 for high schools statewide during a news conference. In school districts throughout Minnesota, graduation rates improved at the highest rates in more than a decade. Saint Paul Public Schools was no exception.

The school district’s strategic plan, Strong Schools, Strong Communities, includes a significant racial equity component that seeks to raise achievement of all students while accelerating achievement for the lowest performing students.

At Como Park Senior High School, the gap between black and white students showed an impressive 12 percent decrease from 2011 to 2013. Other SPPS high schools followed lead. Central Senior High School narrowed the gap by seven percent, Highland Park Senior High School by two percent, and Harding Senior High School by one percent.

Mayor Chris Coleman, Superintendent Silva, SPPS Nutrition Services Assistant Director Monica McNaughton and St. Paul College Culinary Instructor Dan Vasterling will serve as celebrity judges for the event on Friday, February 28, from 3-4:30 p.m. at St. Paul College.

The event aims to recognize the talented youth of St. Paul and connect students to post-secondary education.

Credit Union debuts banking branch at Harding High School
Banking just became easier for students and staff at Harding Senior High School in Saint Paul. The school debuted its St. Paul Federal Credit Union school branch on February 18.

Harding is the second high school in Saint Paul Public Schools to house a credit union branch in its school, said Jerry Utech, a Work-Based Learning instructor at Harding. Como Park Senior High opened a similar branch in October 2012 as a pilot program. Learn more at spps.org.
