Governor and Commissioner of Education donate 100 books to Phalen Lake
The Minnesota Commissioner of Education Brenda Cassellius recently visited Phalen Lake Hmong Studies Magnet to read to students, donate books and promote summer reading through the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge. The “Be a Reading Superhero” challenge encourages students to join the free online reading program to log reading minutes, earn rewards and became a reading superhero.

Johnson High School badminton team wins sixth State Championship in seven years
Congratulations to the 2016 Minnesota State Badminton Team Champions, Johnson Senior High School. This is the sixth state title Johnson has won in seven years. Kudos to second place finishers Washington Tech and third place finishers Central High School. Washington seniors Mu Law and Mu Soe won Washington's school's first state title in the state doubles tournament, and Central's Yer Moua won the state singles title.

Students perform at 95th annual Saint Paul School Parade
The 95th Annual Saint Paul School Patrol Parade and Celebration was May 17. Hundreds of school patrols marched down Fifth Street past Rice Park and ended at CHS Field during the patrol parade and celebration.

Vento's Specialist Night showcases the talents of students and community members
Bruce Vento Elementary School hosted its annual Specialist Night on May 19. Parents and community members enjoyed presentations of student accomplishments in art, health and fitness, science, and engineering. Staff members at 3M and Second Harvest, along with Washington Technology Magnet School's Robotics Team, joined Vento for the event.

Students learn life lessons while raising money for Murray Middle School
The New Lens Urban Mentoring Society provides African American boys at Murray with mentors to inspire them for academic and career success. This year, a group of 8th-grade students secured a grant totaling more than $3,000 for new backboards in the school's gymnasium.
