From the Superintendent: Back from Winter Break — and Preparing for School Choice

Welcome back! I hope you all had an amazing break filled with family and friends. I know very well how hard you work every day, so having the time to relax and recharge for the second half of the school year is well deserved.

Bringing in the New Year carries varying levels of significance for people – for some it represents a time of great reflection, for others it’s resolutions and goal setting. For me the New Year represents a time of hope and opportunity and it starts with the beginning of the school choice season.

On Saturday, families have the opportunity to learn about and choose a school that best fits their child’s needs and interests at the School Choice Fair. This year’s fair has an exciting and new focus on pre-k, kindergarten and early childhood offerings. It is a great opportunity to showcase the exceptional programming we provide to our youngest learners. Help spread the word about the School Choice Fair and share the SPPS open house schedules to prospective families.

Each one of us has power to attract families to Saint Paul Public Schools. In a society increasingly dominated by negative and sensationalistic headlines, we cannot be shy in sharing the amazing happenings occurring every day in our schools. Tell the story of how you helped your class fall in love with reading, explain the richness of your service learning project, show your school’s commitment to the arts – whatever the success, share it!

We are SPPS and the words we say and the actions we take over the next few weeks can have a profoundly positive impact on our enrollment in the fall.

Your very proud superintendent,
