From the Superintendent: Our Students, Community Continue to Inspire

Last Tuesday we saw the power of people coming together for what they believe in.

The voters of Saint Paul elected four new members to the Board of Education. Before the election I participated in positive, productive meetings with Zuki Ellis, Steve Marchese, Jon Schumacher and Mary Vanderwert, and I look forward to collaborating with them when they take office in January. Their new perspectives, ideas and energy will be vital as we tackle the hard work ahead of us. It will take us all working together to move our district forward -- united we stand; divided we fall.

Tuesday also showed us the power of student voice, when 589 SPPS students came together with 36,000 other young people at WE Day Minnesota. WE Day celebrates youth leaders who create positive change in our community and world. The SPPS students who attended WE Day represented more than 2,500 kids in our district who made a commitment to service last year through WE Act.

At the WE Day event, astronaut Mae Jemison recalled the Carl Sagan quote: “We are made of star stuff.” Each of us carries within us the potential of the universe.

Our students and staff choose to use that potential in ways that benefit not just our schools but our entire Saint Paul community. This week some of us will support favorite organizations on Give to the Max Day. Starting next week, some will pledge to the Community Giving Campaign. Your giving helps build a stronger Saint Paul.

Last week was inspiring in many ways. Let’s remember to lift up the Saint Paul citizens -- of all ages -- whose efforts inspire our young people every day of the year.

Your very proud superintendent,
