From the Superintendent: A Great First Week of School!

Colleagues,

What a great first week of school! We had one of the smoothest starts to a school year ever. For me the week was a whirlwind of school visits, spending time in classrooms and talking with students, families and staff. Buildings were calm, organized and ready for our 39,000 students. Every visit reaffirmed my belief that we have the strongest teaching and support staff in the state. Our students entered our buildings with smiles, laughter and filled with the hope that each new year brings -- because of each of you.

To those schools I visited last week, thank you for welcoming me into your classrooms. I look forward to continuing my visits this week and throughout the year.

As we move into week two with our students, I want to share with you one of my professional goals for this year. We are focusing on increasing our overall district-level communications to staff, families and community members. Through district news alerts, social media, email communications, texts, small group meetings and increased outreach, we hope to better provide in-depth and timely information.

One example of this is the Happening Now newsletter. This twice-a-month publication goes to families, staff and community members to highlight key undertakings in SPPS. This is in addition to our daily staff newsletter, SPPS in the News, that showcases stories about SPPS and other education related news. Another way to stay up to date is the new MySPPS app, which allows anyone to follow a specific school’s news, track school bus status, view sports schedules, and much more. Just search “MySPPS” and download the new app from Google Play or the Apple App Store.

Many district leaders have news and information to share directly with you. In that spirit, The Bridge will have guest columnists twice a month. Next week, you will be hearing from our Director of Teaching and Learning Hans Ott, followed by Nutrition Services Director Stacy Koppen.

Students aren’t the only ones who feel a sense of hope at this time of year. We all have every reason to be optimistic about the hard and wonderful work we do. Let's carry this energy and excitement throughout the year.

Your very proud superintendent,
