SPPS Family,

Here we go – another school year officially begins! We are back with kids this week, doing what we love and what we do best.

As always, I was energized to see staff members hard at work during all the different Welcome Week activities: you were engaged, excited and ready for the first day of school. Our students and families are lucky to have you.

This year will bring us success and challenge. I am confident that, together, we will have our best year yet as we go deeper into the why, how and what of Saint Paul Public Schools. These words represent the framework for how I would like all of us to think about our work.

Our why is racial equity transformation. It drives us to both create and support equitable outcomes for all students. As individuals, we began looking deeply inside ourselves and our systems that perpetuate inequity. Our work this year continues to emphasize practical applications for what we’ve learned so far.

Our how is personalized learning. It is the vehicle for racial equity in the classroom. To achieve racial equity, we need to develop learning environments that meet the individual needs of each student. I know this is easier said than done. We support this through 1:1 iPads; student-led initiatives like Dare 2 Be Real; professional development opportunities including Beyond Diversity; culturally responsive teaching; job-embedded professional development; and PLCs at every building.

Our what is ensuring college and career readiness for every child. Our goal is for students to have the opportunity to pursue whatever path they wish upon graduation -- whether it is a four-year degree, technical school, the trades, an apprenticeship or a career straight out of high school. Racial equity through personalized learning is our way to provide multiple options for all our students.

And the who in all of this? My colleagues and friends, the who is you.

I look forward to an amazing year. And don’t forget to have FUN!

Your very proud superintendent
