From the Superintendent: You—SPPS—Are a Wonderful Team

Dear Colleagues:

I made another whirlwind tour of the district this past week, visiting at least 30 schools, and I can tell you that we had a wonderful start to the school year! Thank you to everyone who helped make that possible. It was definitely a team effort.

Our schools today will be filled with the giggles and tears of our youngest students as our PreK and kindergarten classes begin. After 28 years in the school district, I still share their excitement and understand their apprehension. Thankfully, a dedicated, loving teacher and a team of other staff experts await them at each school to guide them toward success.

Student success is why SPPS has been offering all-day kindergarten for at least 20 years. By 1999, almost half of our schools offered all-day kindergarten. We knew how much students benefit from the added time with their teachers and we made that a priority for our school system.

Governor Dayton and the State of Minnesota officially recognized those benefits with the passage last May of the K-12 finance bill that provided funding for all-day kindergarten state-wide. Those additional state dollars allowed us to channel more of our referendum dollars -- previously designated for all-day K -- to our PreK program. As a result, we were able to add PreK classrooms and reduce our PreK waiting list. The academic data from our PreK programs indicates that the more St. Paul children we can serve, the better.

PreK and kindergarten are where it all begins. A bright start in the early years makes a strong finish in high school more likely. Let’s welcome these little ones with open arms.

Your very proud superintendent,
