From the superintendent

Dear Colleagues:

Can you believe it? Spring is finally here! Now that many of us have had a week off, it's time to double-down for the final 10 weeks of our school year. Many thanks to those of you who kept things running over break. Every one of us is part of educating St. Paul's students.

As we move into April, be aware that standardized testing will be underway at schools throughout the district. Tests like the MCAs and MAPs certainly have their pros and cons. Any educator knows that one test can't possibly tell the entire story of how much a student has learned. At the same time, an era of accountability is our reality. In addition to helping our students do the best they can on this year's spring tests, we're also working to reduce redundant tests and improve the tests we currently administer. For example, additional technology in our schools should reduce the difficulties we experienced last year with online testing.

Once testing is done, Summer Term will be upon us offering students one more way to keep learning throughout the year. Even though the priority enrollment deadline has passed, SPPS will continue to enroll students right up to the first day of S-Term. Please be sure to share information about S-Term with parents whenever you have the opportunity -- and if you or someone you know might be interested in teaching this summer, have them visit the HR website.

Finally, if you haven’t had a chance to check out the City of St. Paul’s youth employment program, Right Track St. Paul, please do. I had the honor of watching a Right Track participant, DeShaun Jackson of Harding High School, narrate Mayor Chris Coleman’s video at the Mayor’s recent State of the City Address.  Right Track has some great employment opportunities for St. Paul students and applications are still being accepted.

As we head into the last part of our school year, keep an eye on the district’s online calendar so you know all the opportunities available to celebrate our graduating students. Let’s do everything we can to make sure they cross the finish line successfully.

Your very proud superintendent,
