From the superintendent

Dear Colleagues:

It’s probably difficult to think about summer when the flurries keep flying outside, but for many students, summer planning starts now. I want to encourage all of us to take part in helping ensure that students keep both their bodies and minds active all summer long.

One important way they can do this is to sign up for our new and improved Summer Term (S-Term), which is taking place in more air-conditioned buildings than ever before and includes senior learning on college campuses! S-Term is here to support students over the summer as they build solid foundations for their learning, catch up on credits, or work ahead.

Last year, we welcomed about 9,000 students to S-Term. This year, we have set an ambitious goal to enroll 15,000 students. Six thousand more students would gain skills to help them keep up with their school work, graduate on time, and learn valuable leadership skills that stay with them for life.

S-Term is a marvelous opportunity for students to reach their full potential. Students who participate in S-Term may:

  • Choose from two sessions (June 16 - July 10 and July 14 - August 7)
  • Learn math and reading through hands on projects (K-7)
  • Enjoy leadership training at Freedom School (K-8)
  • Practice their musical instruments (5-7)
  • Earn high school credits early (grade 8)
  • Connect with their community through service learning (grade 8)
  • Recover up to 12 quarter credits required for graduation (9-12)
  • Attend S-Term classes on college campuses (grade 12)

Families received registration packets in the mail during the week of March 10, and the priority deadline for registration is this Friday, March 28. We’ll continue to accept students after that date, but please encourage families to start planning early for summer and turn in their registrations now.

I hope you will consider getting involved with S-Term, too. Visit the Human Resources website for the latest S-Term job postings, and contact the S-Term office if you have any questions.

Your very proud superintendent,
