From the superintendent

Dear Colleagues:

Today may be the first day of our Community Giving Campaign, but I know it is not the first day that you have given back to our community.

You come to work every day and give your time, talent and dedication to making sure SPPS students succeed. As if that’s not enough, many of our teachers and staff spend their own money on school supplies for their classrooms. Others also volunteer at homeless shelters, at your places of worship, or by helping elderly neighbors shovel freshly fallen snow. Still others give clothing donations or money to organizations with missions to help those most in need.

For everything you give, I thank you. SPPS employees truly understand that your giving changes lives.

Changing lives is, in fact, why we come to work each day to serve the students of Saint Paul, and why last year we donated more than $150,000 to help create positive change for our community.

At SPPS, we’re making it easier for you to give. Through our online system, you can give a little from each paycheck to support our community with the help of organizations that distribute money to a multitude of individual agencies, many of which directly support our students:

  • Community Health Charities
  • Community Shares
  • Greater Twin Cities United Way
  • Minnesota Environmental Fund
  • Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless
  • Saint Paul Public Schools Foundation
  • United Negro College Fund
  • United Arts Fund

What you might not know is that you don’t have to direct your funds to these umbrella organizations. You may also make automatic payments from your SPPS paycheck to your favorite charities, such as:

  • Any 501 (c)(3) organization, including your PTA or place of worship
  • Any SPPS program or school
  • Any agency affiliated with one of the organizations listed above

I know you already give so much every day, but please give whatever you can to this campaign. There is no donation too small to help us build strong communities. Visit to learn more.

Your very proud superintendent,
