Colleagues:

Last week our district received great news. The Minnesota Department of Education recognized SPPS for successful work using Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports (PBIS). SPPS was awarded the 2016 District PBIS Recognition -- the first time we have ever been honored in this way.

Further, 11 SPPS schools have received recognition as “Sustaining Exemplar Schools”: leaders in supporting positive behavior, improving school climate and increasing student achievement. The names of these schools follow (those in bold face were recognized in 2015 and 2016):

  • Farnsworth Aerospace (5-8 Campus)
  • Linwood Monroe Arts Plus (Upper Campus)
  • Phalen Lake Hmong Studies Magnet
  • Highland Park Middle
  • Washington Technology Magnet
  • Jackson Preparatory
  • Battle Creek Middle
  • Galtier Community School
  • Four Seasons A+ Elementary
  • St. Paul Music Academy
  • Highwood Hills Elementary

This award reminds us that it’s often easier to see, from a slight distance, the progress that may seem invisible at close range. Our SPPS schools have the capacity to change how we do things -- and many aspects of our schools are changing for the better.

Last week we also announced the six schools that will pilot Restorative Practices starting in the fall. SPPS and SPFT are pleased to announce that American Indian Magnet School, Farnsworth Upper, Johnson Senior High, Maxfield Elementary, Murray Middle and Riverview Elementary will each receive up to $150,000 to explore the relationship healing possibilities of restorative practices.

The International Institute for Restorative Practices says that such practices “proactively build relationships and a sense of community to prevent conflict and wrongdoing.”

Which, of course, is exactly what PBIS is all about.

I know many of us are counting down to year’s end, but in the meantime, cherish the relationships you have built in the last nine months. They may mean more than you know.

Your very proud superintendent,
