Quick tips: Staying active in cold weather, part I
Fight the winter blues by staying active, even in cold weather. Here are some ideas for staying active indoors and out.

When indoors:

  • Get some hand weights or stretch bands to use at home for resistance exercise. You can get fit while you watch your favorite TV show or listen to music. Check out the free exercise library on SparkPeople for exercise ideas.
  • Go for walks at the mall with a friend. Check with local schools and churches for other indoor walking spaces.
  • Buy or rent an exercise DVD, or borrow one at the library. This can be a fun way to stay in shape at home. Many online streaming sites like Netflix offer online exercise videos as well.
  • Take the stairs and fit in walk breaks whenever you can.
  • Do active housework like sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, doing laundry, or washing the windows.
  • Join a gym or health club. Many health clubs off a free trial week; check out options near you.
  • Get involved in sports leagues in your community. Check out Minneapolis or Saint Paul’s current offerings.

Stay tuned next week to find out how to stay active outdoors when the weather is cold.
