Building temperature changes
SPPS buildings are kept between 66-70 degrees year-round. However, as we transition from cooling to heating our buildings in the fall, some offices may be cooler than others. Follow these tips to keeping the chills away until the heating system is fully operational:

  • Get up periodically and move; take a brief walk to get your blood circulating
  • Drink warm fluids such as coffee or tea.
  • Wear layers and keep an extra sweater or light jacket at work

Please help SPPS be compliant with fire code and health/safety guidelines by not bringing space heaters to work. Space heaters can also disrupt the temperature settings for an entire building, causing your students and coworkers to be colder.

Thank you for your cooperation and please continue to report temperature concerns to your building's head engineer.

National School Bus Safety Week is October 21-25
National School Bus Safety Week is an active and evolving public education program designed to promote school bus safety. Recognize National School Bus Safety Week with students and families by using the following tools:

  • Use this article on your school’s website or in a newsletter to families. Translations will be available on October 21.
  • Post one tip from the article every day to your school’s Facebook or Twitter page.

Moodle / maintenance
Moodle and will be unavailable from 3 - 6 p.m. on Thursday, October 17, for scheduled maintenance. Please plan accordingly and direct any questions to the Service Desk at

Open Enrollment brochure to be mailed this week
Open Enrollment for benefits will be held November 4 through November 15, 2013 for the 2014 plan year which will be effective January 1, 2014. 

Employees will receive the 2014 brochure via U.S. mail to home addresses the week of October 14. This brochure will include an overview of the 2014 benefit program options and enrollment process. 

In addition, the Benefits website will be updated, with new 2014 Benefit and Open Enrollment information available for reference and review around October 14. 

Note: If you do not receive the brochure by October 25, please contact the Human Resources office at 651-767-8212. These brochures will be available for pick up to those who did not receive the mailing.

Como Planetarium presents Star Party
The Como Planetarium is hosting a free Star Party on Tuesday, October 22, from 7-10 p.m. A Star Party is an opportunity to look through a telescope and see objects in our night sky and enjoy a free program in the planetarium. Drop by anytime from 7-10 p.m. If it looks like it will be cloudy we will re-schedule for Thursday, October 24. Check the Planetarium website the morning of October 22 to confirm the event day and time.

Upcoming superintendent licensure cohort at University of Minnesota

The University of Minnesota will offer superintendent licensure-required courses at the cohort tuition rate ($350/credit as compared to the $613/credit standard tuition rate). The courses will be available this summer 2014 and will be held on the Minneapolis campus with regularly enrolled licensure students.

The two classes to be offered this summer 2014 are:

  • OLPD 5322 - Leaders in the Superintendency and Central office (3 credits)
  • OLPD 5393 - Leading School Finance Elections (1 credit)

Students who are concurrently seeking both principal and superintendent licensure will also need to complete an internship specific to each license, including a second enrollment in OLPD 5396 - Field Experience in PK-12 Administration (3 credits). This course can be taken at the reduced cohort rate during fall 2014 and will be available on campus in Minneapolis or with the Hopkins cohort.

Participation in the cohort section of these classes will need approval by SPPS and may include current and past cohort participants, as well as others approved by the SPPS district. Typically, students with a current Minnesota K-12 principal license or director of special education license will need to complete these three courses to add the superintendent license.
