New start date for ECSE, Pre-K and kindergarten for Fall 2015
The first day of school for early childhood special education (ECSE), pre-kindergarten (Pre-K) and kindergarten students for the upcoming school year is Thursday, Sept. 10, 2015.

ECSE, Pre-K and kindergarten students were originally scheduled to begin classes on Monday, Sept. 14; however, that date overlaps with Rosh Hashanah, a religious holiday observed between Sunday, Sept. 13 and Tuesday, Sept. 15. The Board of Education voted to change the start date for our staff and families who observe the holiday.

School lunch price increasing for 2015-16
The following increase in school meal prices is required by the Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act and was approved by the Saint Paul Public Schools Board of Education on March 17.

For the 2015-16 school year, the school meals will be priced as follows:

  • Elementary schools: Breakfast is free, lunch is $2.15
  • Middle schools: Breakfast is free, lunch is $2.30
  • High schools: Breakfast is free, lunch is $2.50
  • Reduced price (all grades): No charge
  • Adults: Breakfast is $2.10, lunch is $3.75

Resources to help homeless youth is focus of April 22 discussion
Do you know how many SPPS students and their families are experiencing homelessness? Join us to explore the factors leading to homelessness and the resources available to help homeless youth and their families.

Excerpts from the films “Race: The Power of Illusion - The House We Live In” and “The Homestretch” will be shown. Discussion about the films will be led by staff from Project Reach and the Multicultural Resource Center (MRC) from 4:30 - 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, at Washington Technology Magnet.

MRC to hold training for fifth-grade teachers prior to Bdote Field Trip
The Multicultural Resource Center is providing a training trip for fifth-grade teachers who are bringing students on the Bdote Field Trip. The Bdote Field Trip is an engaging opportunity to experience the land and historical and cultural significance to Dakota people. The trip, based on the Bdote Memory Map, will be led by Dakota educators Ramona Kitto Stately and Ethan Neerdaels.Limited space is also avalialble for other interested staff and community members.

  • When: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 18
  • Where: The bus will leave from the parking lot at Washington Technology Magnet School

Bring a lunch and dress for light hiking. Those on the trip will visit Mounds Park, Wakan Tipi, Fort Snelling State Park, Coldwater Spring and Pilot Knob. SPPS staff can register on PD Express under MRC. Others register by contacting sherry.kempf@spps.org.

There is only one bus. The deadline to register is April 18.

Support SPPS teaching, learning at A Toast to Student Success benefit on April 30
You can support teaching and learning in SPPS by attending A Toast to Student Success, a benefit organized by the Saint Paul Public Schools Foundation.

A Toast to Student Success, planned for Thursday, April 30, will help support the Inspired Educator Grant program. The grants provide more than $25,000 annually to SPPS teachers for innovative projects in their classroom. Grant projects are designed to engage students in critical thinking, encourage problem-solving and inspire a joy of learning.

The event will be held at the Saint Paul Athletic Club, 340 Cedar St. in Saint Paul, and will include a student art show, a silent auction, Latin American music by The uTango Ensemble and more. Tickets cost $30 in advance and $40 at the door.
