From the Superintendent: School climate and leadership development

I appreciate the response so far to our Safe Schools. Safe You. campaign. Though the majority of our schools maintain a calm and respectful atmosphere every day, I believe we all can benefit from taking time to focus in depth on school climate and its role in shaping education.

In January, the Multicultural Resource Center (MRC) collaborated with Washington Technology Magnet to engage hundreds of fourth and fifth grade students in activities to highlight world geography and culture. SPPS staff from the Latino Consent Decree Program and the Office of Multilingual Learning created displays to highlight Latin American culture. In addition, Washington staff led geography activities using a giant South American map on loan from National Geographic. Cultural activities were planned and led by high school students, using MRC resources. Together, more than 600 students from six schools participated in the activities that focused on Latin America.
