Ask SPPS: Why Are MCA Reading Scores So Low This Year?

Comparing the 2011-12 reading scores to 2012-13 is like comparing apples to oranges. The MCAIII reading assessment is a new test that incorporates academic standards consistent with the national Common Core Standards. This new test, like the standards themselves, is much more academically challenging. Even without a more rigorous test, results typically dip in the first year a new test is implemented.

This year's results will serve as the benchmark for future comparisons. We should expect to see corresponding increases each year as teachers and students become more familiar with the standards and better prepared to meet the challenges presented. We saw a similar decrease in statewide test scores after the new math test in 2011 - and we are seeing our students rebounding again this year.
